Pentimento

Pentimento is a portfolio template for painters, printmakers and other artists who make physical work. Most portfolios show a painting as a thumbnail. This one shows what a photograph usually loses: the surface, the size, and the layer underneath.

Four scroll scenes do the work, and all of them run from the CMS:

- Close reading. The hero shows the whole painting beside a large detail of it. As you scroll, a frame travels across the work and the detail follows.

- On the wall. Every work hangs at its real size from the height and width you type in, next to a figure and a metre ruler. Scroll to walk along it.

- Pentimento. Available works are stacked in one frame; scrolling pulls the top one away in knife-width strokes and the next shows through.

- Raking light. A painted surface takes the light as you scroll or move the pointer, so ridges of paint catch it.

Each work also gets its own page with the same three views: lit, read closely, and at scale. A preloader hangs the first page of a visit a touch crooked, like a picture just put on its nail, and lets it settle against a spirit level in under a second.
