Why can’t I open old Framer X projects?
Before the release of Framer’s web platform, you may have used Framer X on the desktop for your prototyping needs. With the release of Framer Web, we’ve also introduced Framer Desktop: a brand new desktop version of Framer to replace Framer X.
Framer Desktop and Framer Web does not support older Framer X projects from before version 51, an extra step is required to enable these projects to work.

Encountering an error when opening Framer X projects
When trying to open a Framer X project from before X51 in Framer on the web or in the desktop app, you will see an error that the project needs to be opened in the last version of Framer X first.
This is required as the Framer project architecture has changed over time. To ensure Framer X projects are opened correctly, an additional step is required to convert your project successfully.
Enabling older Framer X projects to work in Framer
To make your project work in both the desktop and web versions of Framer, you need to open the project file in Framer X51, the last version of Framer X:
- Download Framer X51
- Start and finish the installation
- Open your .framerx or .framerfx project file in this version of Framer
- After opening, hit
⌘
+S
to save your project
Your project should now open in both the desktop version of Framer and Framer’s web version.
File extensions
Project file extensions have not changed with the release of Framer Desktop. Framer X introduced the .framerx extension, which remains used in the new versions of Framer.
Tip: Framer’s web version does not accept .framerfx files. Save your project as a normal .framerx project to upload to Framer Web.
